A templom Dengfengtől 13 km-re található, a Song-shan déli hegyvonulatának északi lejtőjén. 495-ben indiai szerzetesek alapították. Bodhidharma (Da Mo) 9 évet töltött itt egy barlangban teljes némaságban, a barlang falát nézve. A templom többször leégett, jelenlegi létesítményei XIX. századiak. Bodhidharma dolgozott ki egy gyakorlatrendszert, a sok egy helyben üléssel járó meditáció kiegészítésére. Ebből erednek a kínai harcművészetek.

Shaolin Temple is located in the foothills of the Song Shan mountain range, 13 km from the town of Dengfeng. The Temple was established by Indian monks in year 495 AD. Bodhidharma meditated here facing the cave wall for nine years. Supposedly Bodhidharma exercised in the cave to keep fit and developed a set of exercises that later became the foundation for the specialized interpretation of martial arts at Shaolin. Martial arts were already widespread in China and many of the monks were retired soldiers. Thus existing martial arts exercises were combined with Bodhidharma's teachings to create the Shaolin version of Kung Fu.
